Winnington Soda Ash Works

Winnington Soda Ash Works

The ammonia-soda process of manufacturing the industrial alkali sodium carbonate (soda ash) was devised and put to commercial use by Ernest Solvay in 1865 and improved by Ludwig Mond in the 1870s. Brunner Mond and Company Ltd. established the first successful British ammonia-soda works at Winnington, Cheshire in 1873. A second Winnington plant came into production in 1926 at the Wallerscote works. Since 1928 the Brunner Mond Group has formed part of the ICI Alkali Division later becoming Tata Chemicals Europe.

An interesting day out and a bit of hide and seek when security arrived for his shift and we had to hide in the offices while he circled us at 5 mph in his car. We didn’t know much about this building, just that it sat on it’s own on an island surrounded by water and was nicknamed ‘The Snow Factory’. First thing was to figure how to get across the bridge and a few ripped pairs of jeans later…..
