Underground Nuclear Bunker

Underground Nuclear Bunker

If ever the words “it’s finally open!” were going to spring me out of my chair at midnight, make me jump in my car and travel to the opposite end of the country, it would be because they were related to this place! This deep underground bunker had been checked on religiously weekly by a fellow explorer for at least 2 years but as always, was sealed. There was no messing when I pulled up at 3am next to a busy roundabout - this was the only chance I was going to get, so it was straight down the hole!

Not knowing anything about it I was surprised at just how deep it went. I also, once having reached the bottom of the ladder, feared getting shut in there. It was pitch black and there was definitely no phone signal. Making our way down the long corridor, there was a buzzing that got louder, noticeable only because of the deathly silence on first entering the tunnel. Turns out there were generators, back ups or whatever they were for, still running. I have no idea. The electric hoist worked, although it’s clear it had not been used for a very long time. There was even drawers full of what would have been seeds decades ago, ready to reseed if the horrifying event of a nuclear war was to occur.
